Description
Ballindalloch Castle is home to the Macpherson-Grant family and has been since 1546.   It is one of very few historic family homes in Scotland to be continually inhabited by the same family for over four hundred and sixty years.

Ballindalloch Castle was originally built in the traditional Z plan, but has been greatly extended and developed over the centuries.   Beginning its life in more turbulent times as a traditional fortified tower house, it has developed into an elegant country house of excellent quality.

Ballindalloch Castle is justifiably known as the "Pearl of the North" and lies in a beautiful Speyside setting between the rivers Spey and Avon.   The estate consists of farmland, woodland, sporting interests, a variety of properties and a world class golf course.

Ballindalloch Castle is a family home, which is a great attraction to visitors.   It is filled with family memorabilia as well as a fine collection of 17th century Spanish paintings which were collected by Sir John Macpherson-Grant in the mid 19th century.

The grounds of the castle are also well worth visiting, with highlights being the rock garden and the walled garden which are havens of colour and tranquility.

The castle boasts a fine gift shop in which you are able to browse among quality Scottish crafts and gifts, including the Ballindalloch Collection which consists of a range of luxury cashmere, tartans, jewellery and gifts, made in Scotland.   At the end of your visit, you may enjoy a visit to the excellent castle tearoom.

A point of interest is that the author of the very popular "Biggles" books, Captain W.E. Johns, lived at Pitchroy House on the Ballindalloch estate between around 1947 and 1953, during which time he penned at least 15 "Biggles books" as well as a variety of other titles.
