If you, or someone you care for is unwell and you feel you can not wait until your GP surgery re-opens, you may still call your surgery and you should be automatically forwarded to NHS 24. Alternatively, you may call NHS 24 direct on 08454 24 24 24. NHS 24 is a confidential telephone advice and information service which is available across Scotland and is staffed by trained nurses.
When calling with symptoms you will be asked for your name, address, phone number, GP's name and any medication you may be taking. You will then be put through to a trained nurse who will ask questions in order to enable a full assessment. You will either be given practical advice on how best to look after yourself, or if the nurse feels your situation requires a consultation you will be asked to visit the on duty doctor at your local Primary Care Emergency Centre. Staff at the emergency centre will be advised that you are on your way. If you are too unwell to travel, the nurse will arrange a home visit by the on duty doctor. If the nurse considers your situation to be serious, an ambulance can be called while you are on the telephone.
